The closest to the road in the whole of Tibet is the Karola Glacier, which is only more than 300 meters away from the road. After coming out of Yamdrok Lake, we crossed the 4330-meter Smila Pass and came to the ice tongue of Karola Glacier. The front edge of the ice tongue is 5,560 meters above sea level. The place where you can watch the Karola Glacier is about 5,400 meters above sea level. In the area about 5,600 meters north of the mountain pass, the hanging glacier formed after the Ningjin Kangshafeng Glacier drifted southward is the Jingang Sangshi La. The main peak of Mount Guigangri, located to the north of the Himalayas, is said to be the residence of the four mountain gods of Tibetan Buddhism, the Western Mountain God Noji Kangwa Sambu. There are more than 10 peaks above 6,000 meters standing around Naijingang Sang, which is one of the four major snow mountains in Tibet. Naijingang Sangshan is majestic and dangerous with craggy rocks. The top has an abrupt cone, shaped like an eagle's beak. The year-round snow in the slopes, ridges and ravines has developed glaciers. There are more than 116 glaciers nearby, with a glacier area of 118.82 square kilometers. The Karola Glacier is the largest glacier among them, covering an area of 9.4 square kilometers.
Karola Glacier is backed by the southern slope of Naqin Kangsang Peak (7191 meters), one of the four highest peaks in Tibet. The upper part of the glacier is an ice cap with a gentle slope, and the lower part is two ice tongues in the form of hanging glaciers. The east ice tongue is 3 kilometers long, 750 meters wide, and the end of the ice tongue is 5,233 meters high; the west ice tongue is 4.5 kilometers long, 1.5 kilometers wide, and the end of the ice tongue is 5,145 meters high. The entire glacier area is 9.4 square kilometers.
The undulations of bedrock hills at the glacier front cause the top of the slowly moving ice at the glacier tongue to crack. The ice and snow crack and melt along the ice layer, forming a magnificent forest of ice towers. The snow and dust on the seracs show various strange folds in the shape of clouds, just like the patterns carefully carved by skilled craftsmen. On the bedrock ice erosion platform at the front edge of the glacier tongue, several wedge-shaped scratches more than 10 meters long, 10-20 cm wide, and 8-10 cm deep can be seen in parallel distribution. This is a rare sign in other glaciers, shaped like Guide rails for a "planer".
The huge glacier stretches from the misty place on the top of the mountain to the roadside only a few hundred meters away from the road. It brings a bit of cool feeling in the crystal clear blue. Although the glacier as a whole is layered in black and white due to the impact of dust on the road for many years, the upper half of the glacier shines like a giant thangka hanging on the mountain wall under the sunlight.
